Happened to catch Hairspray again today--still pretty much a perfect entertainment (sorry, Michael), even with George Wendt amiably shrugging his way through as Edna--and was struck by this exchange:

Tracy Turnblad: I also hope to be the first female president...
Corny Collins: As your first act as president, what would you do?
Tracy Turnblad: I'd make everyday Negro Day!

Nice. In related news, I recently heard from a relative who grew up in Baltimore that the real-life basis for "The Corny Collins Show," "The Buddy Deane Show," was actually pushed off the air for trying to integrate black and white teens. Another way truth is harsher than fiction.
